January 2, 2012

Xbox fans who are eagerly awaiting the release of the next generation Xbox 720 later this year will probably want to find something else to look forward to in 2012, because it’s now highly unlikely that we’ll see the Xbox 720 in 2012.

Recently it was announced that there would be a special edition of the Xbox 360 released in conjunction with Halo 4. Halo 4 was announced in Q3 of last year, and may be released around the end of 2012. It wouldn’t make any sense to release the Halo 4 Special Edition Xbox 360 and the next generation Xbox 720 at the same time, so it seems like we’ll be waiting a while longer for the Xbox 360.

A lot of people have been speculating that 2013 or even 2014 would make more sense for the Xbox 720 for other reasons. The Xbox 360 still has a lot of life in it, and is selling like crazy—so why would Microsoft release a new generation of Xbox now? It makes more sense to keep on developing while they collect the profits on the current product, and develop an even better product for the future. In the meantime, at least we can look forward to Halo 4 and the Halo 4 Special Edition Xbox!
